Deep-dive guide

Why feed math matters more than pedigree

India is the world's largest milk producer at 230 million tonnes (NDDB 2023-24), with 8 crore dairy farming households contributing 5% of national GDP. Yet per-animal yield averages 1,777 kg/year — one third of New Zealand and half of the European Union. The single biggest cause is inadequate and unbalanced feeding. ICAR-NDRI Karnal trials repeatedly show that switching from "what's available in the cattle shed" to a TDN-DCP-balanced ration lifts daily milk by 15-25% within 60 days. The calculator implements the NDRI feeding standard so any farmer with a known body weight and milk yield can size feed correctly.

The four nutrient targets

  • Total Digestible Nutrients (TDN) — the energy proxy. Computed in kg/day. Maintenance need ≈ 4 + 0.5 per 100 kg body weight; production need ≈ 0.32 kg per kg 4%-Fat-Corrected Milk.
  • Digestible Crude Protein (DCP) — the protein proxy, in g/day. Maintenance ~25 + 2 per 100 kg BW; production ~60 g per kg FCM.
  • Dry-Matter Intake (DMI) — appetite ceiling, in kg/day. Approximately 2.5-3% of body weight + 0.4-0.5 kg per litre of milk.
  • Macro-minerals + vitamins — Ca 25-40 g/day, P 18-30 g/day, salt 50-80 g/day for a 500 kg HF crossbred yielding 15 L. ICAR-NDRI publishes detailed tables.

Worked example: HF crossbred 500 kg, 15 L @ 4% fat

  • FCM = 0.4 × 15 + 15 × 0.6 (kg fat) = 6 + 9 = 15 kg FCM
  • Maintenance TDN = 4 + (500/100 × 0.5) = 6.5 kg
  • Production TDN = 0.32 × 15 = 4.8 kg
  • Total TDN = 11.3 kg/day
  • Maintenance DCP = 25 + (500/100 × 2) = 35 g
  • Production DCP = 60 × 15 = 900 g
  • Total DCP = 935 g/day
  • DMI = 500 × 0.025 + 15 × 0.4 = 12.5 + 6 = 18.5 kg/day

A typical ration mix that delivers this: 30 kg green fodder (berseem/maize + sorghum) = 5 kg DM with 50% TDN and 12% DCP = 2.5 kg TDN + 600 g DCP. 5 kg dry roughage (paddy/wheat straw) = 4.5 kg DM with 45% TDN and 2% DCP = 2 kg TDN + 90 g DCP. 6 kg concentrate (Type-I cattle feed 70% TDN, 18% DCP) = 5.4 kg DM × 70% = 3.8 kg TDN + 1080 g DCP. Plus 2 kg of cottonseed cake = 1.8 kg DM × 75% = 1.4 kg TDN + 360 g DCP. Sum: 9.7 kg TDN, 2,130 g DCP, 16.7 kg DMI. TDN short, DCP excess — adjust by replacing 1 kg cake with 1 kg maize grain (higher TDN, lower DCP).

Indian feed ingredient guide

  • Green fodder: berseem 65% TDN/12% DCP, maize 60/8, sorghum 55/7, lucerne 70/16, napier 50/7, oats 65/10
  • Dry roughage: paddy straw 38/2, wheat straw 45/2, ragi straw 42/3
  • Concentrates: Type-I 70/18, Type-II 65/15
  • Cakes: cottonseed 75/24, mustard 75/30, groundnut 80/40, soybean 80/45
  • Grains: maize 78/9, bajra 70/10, jowar 75/10, broken rice 80/8
  • Brans: wheat bran 65/12, rice bran 60/10, gram husk 50/15

Mineral mixture is non-negotiable

ICAR-NDRI surveys consistently find 60-80% of Indian dairy animals deficient in Zn, Cu, Co, I. A 50 g daily mineral-mixture supplement (Agrimin Forte, Stayfit Mineral, Nutricore — many brands; CARI also publishes generic formulations) costs ₹3-5/day and recovers 8-12% milk yield. The mineral mix should provide salt 30-40%, calcium 12-16%, phosphorus 6-8%, magnesium 1-2%, sulphur 0.5%, plus trace elements.

Schemes that finance the math

National Livestock Mission Entrepreneurship Development Programme (NLM-EDP, 2021) supports dairy unit projects with 50% subsidy on capital up to ₹50 lakh project cost. Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF, 2020) gives 3% interest subvention on bank loans for dairy processing, feed plants, breed improvement. Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS) supports 2-10 cow unit setup. KCC for dairy now includes working capital component at 4% effective rate (post-MISS).

Body condition score (BCS) — visual check

BCS 1-5 scale: 1 emaciated, 3 ideal, 5 obese. Indian HF crossbred ideal BCS 3.0-3.25 in lactation, 3.25-3.75 in dry period. BCS below 2.5 → increase concentrate by 1 kg. Above 3.75 → cut concentrate, increase exercise. ICAR-NDRI photo guide is widely distributed via cooperatives (Amul, Mother Dairy).

How to use this calculator

Type body weight (girth-based estimate: girth(cm)² × length(cm) / 11600 → kg for crossbred), daily milk yield, and milk fat. Toggle pregnant for late pregnancy. Output gives TDN, DCP, DMI — the three numbers to balance against your local feed ingredients. Use ICAR-NDRI's free Feed Formulation App (Hindi/English) for ingredient-level mix optimisation.
