राज्य अवलोकन

Telangana — India's youngest large state (formed 2 June 2014 by bifurcation from Andhra Pradesh) — has emerged as a national agriculture and irrigation showcase. The state covers 112,077 km² of the Deccan Plateau, with elevation 100–800 m, semi-arid to sub-humid climate, and 31 districts (post-2016 reorganisation) divided roughly into Telangana North (cotton-redgram-soybean — Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad) and Telangana South (paddy-maize — Rangareddy, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, Khammam). Roughly 55% of the workforce is in agriculture; the average landholding is 1.1 ha — slightly above national average.

Telangana is #1 in India for cotton (in volume — overtaking Maharashtra in some years), oil palm (mission-mode expansion to 20 lakh acres), seed production (Hyderabad is the global seed capital with all major MNCs), and turmeric (Nizamabad is the world's largest turmeric mandi). It ranks high in paddy (a Rabi paddy 'tsunami' since Kaleshwaram came online), maize, redgram, and aquaculture (inland prawn farming in Bhadrachalam). The state government has pioneered farmer-centric DBT: Rythu Bandhu (renamed Rythu Bharosa 2024) provides ₹12,000/acre/year investment support to every land-owning farmer (largest such scheme in India by per-capita transfer), and Rythu Bima offers ₹5 lakh life insurance to every farmer aged 18–59, premium-free.

मिट्टी का विवरण

Telangana's soils are mainly red sandy-loam (covering 48% of geography — Rangareddy, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda, parts of Karimnagar) — moderate fertility, low water-holding, suited to cotton, jowar, redgram. Black cotton soils (vertisols) cover northern districts (Adilabad, Nizamabad, Karimnagar) — deep clays with high CEC, prone to cracking. Chalka (sandy-loamy red) soils predominate in southern districts. Zn, B, and S deficiency widespread. PJTSAU's soil-fertility maps are foundational. Khammam-Warangal carries deep red soils suited to oil palm cultivation (mission crop).

जल संसाधन

Average rainfall 900 mm; SW monsoon contributes 75%. The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project — world's largest multi-stage lift scheme — pumps Godavari water across 1.8 million acres (commissioned 2019). Other major projects: Sriram Sagar, Nizam Sagar, Nagarjuna Sagar (shared with AP), Mid-Manair, Lower Manair. Telangana has dramatically expanded irrigation from 25% (2014, at state formation) to 71% — the steepest rise of any Indian state. Drip irrigation under Telangana Micro Irrigation Project covers 5+ lakh ha. Mission Bhagiratha is the world's largest rural drinking-water scheme.

Cropping calendar

Telangana's bifurcated agro-calendar reflects its Kaleshwaram-driven irrigation revolution. Kharif paddy is the dominant crop — transplanted June-July, harvested October-November. Cotton (Bt) is sown May-July with picking from October to February (Telangana cotton crop spans 5-7 picks). Maize is kharif-dominant, sown June-July, harvested October. Soybean in Adilabad-Nizamabad is sown June-July, harvested October. Rabi paddy (a near-recent phenomenon post-Kaleshwaram, 2019+) is transplanted Nov-Dec and harvested March-April — Telangana's rabi paddy area has expanded from <1 lakh ha in 2018 to 15+ lakh ha by 2024. Oil palm (Khammam-Bhadradri-Suryapet) operates 25-year perennial harvesting with monthly fresh-fruit-bunch (FFB) cuts.

MSP procurement & mandi network

Telangana procures 20+ lakh tonnes of paddy and 5+ lakh tonnes of cotton annually through Civil Supplies (paddy) and CCI (cotton) centres. The state has built one of India's most aggressive direct-to-farmer support systems: Rythu Bandhu (now Rythu Bharosa) pays ₹12,000/acre/year as investment support, Rythu Bima provides ₹5 lakh life insurance free, and 24×7 free farm power since 2014 has driven the rabi paddy expansion (though at severe groundwater cost). The 2025-26 MSP for paddy is ₹2,369/q (Common) and ₹2,389/q (Grade A — Telangana sona masuri). The Mission Bhagiratha integrated drinking-water grid is the world's largest rural water supply system. Mandi infrastructure: 175 main + 95 sub-yards under TS Agricultural Marketing Department.

District-wise crop concentrations

District concentrations: paddy (top — Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Suryapet, Warangal, Khammam); cotton (top — Adilabad, Warangal, Karimnagar, Nizamabad, Khammam); maize (top — Nizamabad, Kamareddy, Karimnagar — among India's highest yields); turmeric (top — Nizamabad — world's largest turmeric mandi); chilli (top — Khammam, Warangal — Warangal Chapata GI); oil palm (top — Khammam, Bhadradri-Kothagudem, Suryapet, Nalgonda — state-led mission targets 20 lakh acres); seed production (top — Hyderabad-Rangareddy — global seed capital with all major MNCs including Bayer, Syngenta, Corteva, plus domestic seed industry concentration); aquaculture (top — Bhadrachalam, Khammam — inland prawn farming, ranked top-3 in India).

Climate-resilience & soil-test interpretation

Telangana's rapid expansion of irrigation through Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project (commissioned 2019) has been a massive engineering achievement — pumping Godavari water across 1.8 million acres — but has raised concerns over financial sustainability (₹85,000 cr+ cost), seismic risk in the Sironcha barrage area, and downstream Godavari delta impact. Free 24×7 power since 2014 has driven groundwater extraction higher; CGWB classes 11 mandals over-exploited. Cotton pink-bollworm resistance to Bt has caused yield losses in Adilabad and Warangal — ICAR-CICR is running cotton-specific IPM workshops. Climate-resilient varieties: PJTSAU-developed paddy (KNM 118, JGL 18047, RNR 15048 — short-duration), cotton hybrids tolerant to whitefly. Telangana's flagship Telangana Rashtra Sameekhya annual agriculture statistics are among India's most granular state-level publications.

स्थानीय भाषा

Telugu in the Telugu script (Brahmic abugida, classical language since 2008) is the official language. Urdu (Persian-Arabic) has secondary recognition (sizable Deccani-Urdu speaking population, particularly Hyderabad). Land records on Dharani (the controversial blockchain-style integrated land registry, replaced by Bhu Bharati in 2024) are in Telugu and English.

Frequently asked questions

What is Rythu Bandhu / Rythu Bharosa?

An income-support scheme paying ₹12,000 per acre per year (in 2 instalments — Kharif and Rabi) to every land-owning farmer in Telangana, regardless of holding size. Launched 2018 as Rythu Bandhu (₹10,000/acre); upgraded 2025 to Rythu Bharosa (₹12,000/acre). The largest per-capita farmer transfer scheme in India, conceptually a precursor to PM-KISAN.

How big is the Kaleshwaram project?

The world's largest multi-stage lift irrigation project — pumps Godavari water across 1.8 million acres of north Telangana through a 21-stage lift system and 1,800 km of canals. Commissioned 2019. It catalysed Telangana's rabi paddy expansion from <1 lakh ha (2018) to 15+ lakh ha (2024).

Why is Telangana called the seed capital of India?

Hyderabad-Rangareddy hosts all major multinational seed companies (Bayer, Syngenta, Corteva, BASF) and most of India's domestic seed industry — over 300 seed companies, 200+ research stations. The ICAR-Indian Institute of Millets Research and ICRISAT are in Hyderabad. Around 70% of India's hybrid cotton, maize, and vegetable seed is processed here.

What is the Telangana free-farm-power policy?

Telangana provides 24×7 free farm power to agricultural connections since 2014 — a unique commitment. This has driven rabi paddy expansion but raised groundwater extraction; CGWB classes 11 mandals over-exploited.

What is the Warangal Chapata Chilli GI?

A pungent, bright-red chilli variety from Warangal-Khammam belt, GI-tagged 2008. Used in pickles, spice masalas, and exported to international markets. Telangana is India's #1 chilli state (in volume, alongside Andhra).
